Why Jos Archbishop Lost Sympathy for ASUU

Catholic Archbishop of Jos, Most Rev. Ignatius Kaigama rued the prolonged strike by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), saying he had lost sympathy for the lecturers.
Archbishop Kaigama, who spoke at the 80th Anniversary of St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Jos, Plateau State, on October 6, 2013, Sunday, said that members of ASUU had lost focus on the cause for their battle.
The cleric said that ASUU, by allowing the strike to linger and allowing students to stay at home for four months running, had exhibited utter insensitivity to the plight of Nigerian students and their future.
He said he regretted that the association had failed to yield to pleas from all quarters, including the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, stressing that ASUU had shown that it was fighting for other causes other than the future of education in the country.
“Initially I was with ASUU, but when they have allowed the students to stay at home for four months now they begin to lose my sympathy. You don’t go on a strike for a long time, especially in a sector like education, which is the bedrock of the development of any society.
“You said you are fighting for the students and have allowed them to stay at home for more than four months, you must be fighting for something else. You have made your point and all I expect is that they should have listened to all the pleadings by Nigerians, including the Catholic Bishops Conference, which has just ended its meeting in Benue State and where we appealed to ASUU, in the interest of Nigerian students, to go back to the classroom,” Most Rev. Ignatius Kaigama said.

Man Steals N6.8m From ATM In Abuja

The Police Command in the FCT have begun investigation into the alleged theft of N6.8 million from the ATM of a bank at Jabi District, Abuja, on Saturday.
DSP Altine Daniel, the command's spokesperson, who disclosed this on Tuesday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, said that a suspect had been arrested in connection with the theft.

He said that the 27-year-old suspect (name withheld), allegedly broke into the ATM belonging to one of the old generation banks and stole the money.

Daniel, however, said that the amount that was stolen was recovered "intact" from the suspect after he was arrested in the premises of the bank.

"On Sept. 21, at about 10 a.m., some staff of the bank came to report at our office at Utako that their ATM had problem.

"When our men moved to the scene and started looking for clues and anything that will assist them in their investigation, they noticed that the CCTV monitor room had been tampered with.

"After a thorough search, they also noticed that the door of the toilet in the room was locked from within and when they opened it, they found somebody seated.

"The suspect was picked up and taken to the station where he confessed to the crime," she said.

Top 10 Widespread Dreams & Their Meanings

Everyone dreams (even if we don’t always remember them after the fact) and researchers have found that the majority of us have dreams with similar themes. For years people have tried to uncover the meaning of dreams – the fleeting images that we see when we go to sleep. Some interpretations are outright bizarre, while others are pretty understandable.

The list of interpretations that the International Association for the Study of Dreams (IASD) has given to the most recurring and common types of dream can be found below.

1.Dream scenario: you are usually in or near a car or some other type of vehicle which is out of control or has other problems that seem insurmountable. For example, the brakes may have failed, you may have lost control of the steering, or be heading over a cliff or crashing. You can either be the driver or the passenger.

Possible meaning: you are feeling powerless over something in your life – or that you are heading for a crash (metaphorically speaking).

2.Dream scenario: you are trying to operate mechanical equipment which either fails to work, or fails to work in the way that you expect it to. The vast majority of these dreams involve a telephone – either trouble dialing, losing a connection, or dialing a wrong number. It can involve a lost Internet connection, or something manual like a jammed or broken machine.

Possible meaning: you feel you are losing touch with reality, or that a part of your body or mind is not functioning as it should. It can also occur when you are feeling anxious about making a connection with another person in real life.

3.Dream scenario: you are lost and trying to find your way out of an area – such as a forest, city streets, a large building, or other maze-like structure. Another way this dream plays out involves you being trapped, buried alive, caught in a web, or unable to move for some other reason. This is often accompanied by a feeling of terror.

Possible meaning: you are trapped in real life – unable to make the right choice.

4.Dream scenario: you are rushing to catch a bus, train, plane, or other type of public transport – but you miss it – usually by a fraction of a second. Rather than feeling fear in this dream, you usually feel frustration. This dream can also occur in a different form, in which you arrive late for an important performance or sporting event that you are supposed to participate in, only to find that the event has already begun.

Possible meaning: you feel that you have missed out on an important opportunity in your real life. It will often occur when you are struggling over an important decision.

5.Dream scenario: you are prevented from passing a test in a variety of different possible scenarios. In one scenario you find that you are unable to make it to the test on time, often through being unable to find the test room. In other versions you are unprepared (either through lack of study) or you are missing equipment.

Possible meaning: you are feeling tested in some way in your real life. You may feel that you are unprepared for something or playing the wrong part in life.

6. Dream scenario: you (or a loved one) are ill, injured, or dying. It is a moderately common dream and, not surprisingly, occurs often at the onset of an illness.

Possible meaning: it may be a warning you of an upcoming physical risk to yourself or a loved one. When it is someone else in the dream that dies, it can mean that you feel that part of yourself (that you see represented by that person) is dead. It may also mean that you wish the person would go away, or that you fear losing them. Aside from becoming ill, this dream can mean that you are emotionally hurt or are afraid of becoming hurt.

7.Dream scenario: you are being chased. Most often the chaser is a monster or some person that is frightening, and occasionally it may be an animal. You may be surprised to know that this is the most commonly experienced nightmare theme.

Possible meaning: someone, something (possibly something as obscure as an emotion) is making you feel threatened. One way to determine the root of the threat is to ask yourself who or what in your real life most closely resembles the “creature” or circumstance in your dream. It is also worth noting that sometimes this dream is a replay of an actual event in your life.

8.Dream scenario: you discover extremely decayed or missing teeth in your own mouth. Sometimes you will dream that you open your mouth and your teeth begin to fall out. The fact that the majority of people today have reasonable teeth, it is not surprising that we feel so emotionally disturbed by these dreams.

Possible meaning: we are afraid of being found unattractive. At a deeper level, it can signify a fear of embarrassment or a loss of power in real life.

9. Dream scenario: you are unclothed, partially unclothed, or dressed inappropriately (for example wearing pajamas to work). Occasionally you are the witness of another person who is Unclad while you are clothed. This is often accompanied by feelings of embarrassment and shame, but occasionally with the feeling of pride or freedom.

Possible meaning: you are feeling exposed, awkward, or vulnerable, or you are afraid that you have revealed too much of yourself (such as a secret or a very personal feeling) in a real life situation. An interesting fact about this type of dream is that it occurs much more frequently in people who are involved in a wedding ceremony in their real life.

10.Dream scenario: you are in the state of free fall – it is such a common dream, in fact, that myths have arisen over them; the most common myth is, of course, that you will die if you hit the ground in the dream. I can assure you, having hit the ground in more than one falling dream, that this is not true at all. In the falling dream we are usually falling through the air and frightened. Occasionally we may be sinking in water (and in danger of drowning).

Possible meaning: typically a person having this dream is feeling insecure or lacking in support in their waking life. These dreams often occur when you are overwhelmed in life and feel ready to give up. If you have this dream you should evaluate your current situation and try to locate the problem that is overwhelming you. Deal with it and this dream should go away.

Boy With Ability to See in Pure Darkness Shocks Medics

A young Chinese boy who was born with beaming blue eyes has stunned medics with his ability to see in pitch black darkness.
Nong Yousui from Dahua, China has eyes that reflect neon green when light is shined on them.

Doctors have studied Nong's amazing eyesight since his dad took him to hospital concerned over his bright blue eyes.

"They told me he would grow out of it and that his eyes would stop glowing and turn black like most Chinese people but they never did", his Dad said.

Nong enjoys playing outside with his schoolmates but experiences discomfort when in bright sunlight, however can see completely clearly in pure darkness.

To test his abilities, a Chinese journalist prepared a set of questionnaires which he was able to finish while sitting in a pitch black room.

The tests show Nong can read and write perfectly without any light and can see as clearly as most people do during the day.

According to the World Record Academy (the leading international organization which certify world records), Nong has even set the world record for the first human who can see in the dark.

In animals, night vision is made possible by the existence of a thin layer of cells, called the tapetum lucidum.

And like a Siamese cat, Nong's sky-blue eyes flash neon green when illuminated by a flashlight.

Nong's night vision has sparked interest around the world by vision scientists, evolutionary biologists, and genetic engineers.

And this is good news for science as we may eventually be able to use genetic technologies to deliberately create such a condition ourselves.

A new and growing generation of extraordinary and gifted children are springing up across our planet.

ASUU: Strike To Continue As ASUU Rejects FG Offer

The meeting between the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government yesterday, which was widely expected to end the ongoing lecturers’ strike, ended in a stalemate.

ASUU leadership which met the Governor Gabriel Suswam-led government negotiating team for over three hours at the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation in Abuja, said government was trying to renegotiate a 2009 agreement both parties have already agreed upon.

ASUU president Nasir Fagge told reporters that the objective of the current strike is to get government to “implement the 2009 ASUU/FGN and particularly to implement the provisions of the memorandum of understanding we reached with the government in 2012.”

He said the outcome of yesterday’s meeting shows that not much has been achieved because work has not yet commenced on the aspects of the agreement on needs assessments which was referred to the Ministry of Education.

Speaking on the N87 billion “earned allowance” which his union is demanding he said that “since government made it clear that it doesn’t have the money to implement that…that government is going to consult the universities’ governing councils…if there is any need for subsequent meeting, we will do that.”

However, the government’s side said release of the N400 billion earmarked for infrastructure in the universities will start by September 1, and that only N30 billion for earned allowances will be provided to the lecturers.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation Anyim Pius Anyim said the money will be paid after “reasonable due process determined by the universities’ councils.”

Responding to the offer of N30 billion, ASUU reiterated its stance of not renegotiating but only demanding an implementation of the 2009 agreement.

“I think it is important to clarify that at this point we are not making a demand; there was an agreement with government, and even that aspect that government is talking about, the earned entitlement of staff of the universities, that includes the technical staff, members of the senior staff association and members of the non academic staff… what the union is talking about is the implementation of 2009 agreement not the renegotiation of the agreement,” Fagge said.

Both sides agreed to consult further after the meeting.

Fagge expressed hope that government will do the right thing saying, “we will wait to hear from government after the consultation with councils. Whatever they place on the table, we will look at it. But for now, we will also go back and report tour principals on the development.”

No date was agreed for a future meeting.

BREAKING NEWS:- FG Forced ASUU To Embark On Strike

Once again, the Federal Government’s refusal to honour an agreement it reached with lecturers of public universities has forced the Academic Staff Union of Universities to embark on industrial action on Monday, SEGUN OLUGBILE reports

When the Academic Staff Union of Universities suspended its two-month strike in February 2012, many had thought that the last had been heard of national strikes in public institutions. This optimism was hinged on the Memorandum of Understanding signed by the Federal Government and the lecturers on how to resolve funding challenges, infrastructural decay and welfare problem in the nation’s public universities.

But this is not to be, as the union on Monday stated that it has returned to the trenches to fight government for its alleged refusal to honour an agreement it reached with lecturers. Specifically, ASUU said it has resumed the suspended strike from Monday (yesterday). This action, the union’s National President, Dr. Nasir Fagge, said was taken after the Federal Government allegedly failed to implement the agreement.

Fagge said the action, though painful, would be total, comprehensive and last for as long as the government implements the details of the Memorandum of Understanding that both parties signed in 2011. Consequently, the semester examinations going on in some universities would be disrupted, while admission processes would be put on hold. Final year students writing their projects would be hit hard, as their supervisors would not attend to them. By this, academic activities in public tertiary institutions, particularly in universities and polytechnics, which had been on strike in the last three months, would be paralysed.

The decision to embark on the action was taken during the National Executive Council meeting of ASUU at the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State between Sunday and Monday. All the 53 chapters of ASUU were represented at the meeting, during which 51 chapters of the union overwhelmingly voted in support of the action.

Briefing the press about the outcome of the NEC meeting at the University of Lagos on Monday, Fagge said the union decided to suspend the action in January 2012 after the Federal Government and ASUU signed the MoU, which contained how all the issues of funding, pension scheme, retirement age and payment of earned allowance for qualified lecturers would be handled.

The Federal Government, the union stated, had only implemented the extension of the retirement age of professors to 70, but had failed to pay the earned allowance for lecturers who are assigned other duties apart from teaching, research and community service. The earned allowance is the money paid to lecturers who are assigned to administrative duties such as heads of department, hall wardens, student project’s supervision and examination duties and pay for extra workload on lecturers.

Under the student projects’ supervision allowance, a professor is expected to be paid N15, 000 per theses. Also, under the extra workload category, the lecturer/student ratio in Arts, Social Sciences and Education faculties is one lecturer to 50 students, one to 35 in Faculty of Sciences and one lecturer to 25 students in Colleges of Medicine. Lecturers are supposed to be paid if they have more than the national lecturer/student ratio.

“When we signed the MoU, it was stated that N100bn had been set aside to pay the earned allowance. But I can tell you that no lecturer has been paid since 2009. Yes, the government has extended the retirement age of professors to 70 as agreed, earned allowances have not been paid while little has been done to raise the level of infrastructure in universities,” he said.

Although he explained that the union had met with government over the matter many times, government has refused to respect the agreement. Rather, he said, ASUU was told that the government forgot to include the earned allowance in the budget.

The Chairman, ASUU, UNILAG chapter, Dr. Karo Ogbinanka, who had earlier briefed the press about the readiness of his chapter to start the strike after a congress on Monday, explained that the strike was called because government had never shown enough commitment to the development of the sector.

He explained that after the MoU was signed, a NEEDS Assessment Committee on the State of Public Universities was set up to look at the state of infrastructure of the institutions.

“The report has been submitted and all of us know that our universities fall short in physical development, but our concern is government has not done enough to revamp these institutions and the modalities for the injection of funds into these universities have not been followed. That is why there has been increase in the rate of agitation for improved municipal facilities in our universities which has unfortunately been leading to the deaths of innocent students,” Ogbinaka said.

But why is the union embarking on strike when it has not given the government the required ultimatum, Ogbinaka explained that the union had done a warning strike before now.

“Anyway, we don’t even need to give them ultimatum because it is clearly stated in the MoU that we signed with them that we (ASUU) will go on strike without warning should they fail to honour the agreement. They have reneged on the agreement and so there is nothing that can stop us from embarking on this comprehensive and total strike,” he said.

On when UNILAG would join the strike, Ogbinaka said that immediately after the press briefing, a congress would be called and the university management would be informed. “It’s a national strike and UNILAG has joined the action,” he said.

Also the National Treasurer of ASUU, Dr. Ademola Aremu who is also the former Chairman, University of Ibadan chapter of ASUU said the action, being a national one, would be fully supported by lecturers at the premier university. “We are not fighting management of the university, it is the Federal Government that should be blamed for pushing us to the wall to make this painful decision,” Aremu said.

Most of the students our correspondent spoke to on this new development expressed sadness at the action. They called on the Federal Government to honour the agreement by giving their teachers their due. “I’m in the final year, if this crisis is not urgently resolved, it will dislocate my career and that of the other students,” Wale, a student of Political Science at UNILAG said.

But before ASUU finally resorted to go on strike, the House of Representatives had few weeks ago summoned the Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufa’i and officials of the union with a view to ensuring that the crisis did not degenerate. The duo were invited to meet with members of the House Committee on Education as part of the moves by the legislature to avert the looming strike.

It followed a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Mr. Bashir Babale (PDP/ Kano) and unanimously endorsed by his colleagues.

Babale said it had become worrisome that university lecturers frequently embark on strikes to compel the government to meet its obligations.

This, he noted, was not good enough as the issues at the root of the crisis were matters that had been agreed upon by both parties.

The lawmaker urged the House to intervene in the crisis and avert the impending strike.

Other lawmakers who contributed to the debate, argued that democracy cannot survive without good education.

They warned that it would be wrong for the government to continue to treat its 2009 agreement with ASUU with levity. But this intervention was fruitless, as government said it had no money to pay the earned allowance.

“We even agreed to sacrifice 20 per cent of the earned allowance but government said it could only pay 50 per cent. We were even shocked when they said they had forgotten to include the money into the budget. So, since 2009 no lecturer has been paid the earned allowance and all of us can testify to the fact that our universities whether old or new are still being underfunded,” Ogbinaka said.

The ASUU officials, however, pleaded with students and parents to bear with the union as they could no longer stand government’s lack of commitment to education.

The last time ASUU embarked on a national strike over the same issue was December 5, 2011. The union was prevailed upon to suspend the strike in February 2012 after the Federal Government signed the now contentious MoU with ASUU with a promise to accede to the lecturers’ requests. President Goodluck Jonathan hurriedly signed into law a bill that sought to extend the retirement age of professors to 70. But after that not much had been done to make the system better than it was in 2009.

Efforts to speak with the minister failed, as a top official in the ministry, who pleaded anonymity, said she was not available for comments.

The source, however said the ministry would comment on the new development VERY SOON.

"I work hard & I can enjoy my money" Wizkid defends buying N15m car

Wizkid replaced his N15million Porsche Panamera car with a brand new one less than two weeks after crashing it in an accident. Some people criticized him for it but the music star says he works hard and can spend his money any way he wants to.

He tells Encomium magazine:
"I needed to get another one because after the accident, I didn't have a car and I have to move around. I started taking cabs before I decided to buy this new car to move around. It is needed for work. And I don't think there's anything wrong in splashing millions on a car. If someone works hard and decides to spend on something that he thinks is good for him, why not? In fact, I don't think there's need to justify whether its is wrong or not. I work hard and I will enjoy my money"

The child born without 50% of her skull...WATCH PICTURES!

On May 13, 2010, a baby girl; Okiki(Jesu) was born to the Olawuyi’s in Ibadan, oyo state, Nigeria, with a rare medical condition subsequently diagnosed as ‘Congenital Cranial Deficiency’. In other words, she was delivered with at least 50% of her skull unformed. For the Olawuyi’s, that day marked the beginning of a 3year struggle against stigmatization, discrimination & near hopelessness.

After rejections from several hospitals around the world, renowned neurosurgeon at the Johns Hopkins Medical International hospital, Baltimore, Maryland; Dr. Ben Carson agreed to lead a team of surgeons in performing a skull reconstruction surgery on 3 year old Okiki. After a review of her case history, the tentative cost of Okiki’s surgery was put at US$234,000 (Two hundred and thirty four thousand United States dollars). On receiving this estimate, GIPLC reached out to her local network of donors and phenomenally raised this sum of money in approximately 72hours.

3 year old Okiki and her parents under stewardship of Coordinator and Project Director of GIPLC journeyed to the US on May 4th 2013 to undergo her skull reconstruction surgery which was scheduled for the 22nd of May 2013 at the Johns Hopkins Medical International. However, complications have occurred following her over 14 hour’s initial surgery, as a result of inconsistencies in her medical history, in addition to the fact that it was a maiden attempt in paediatric neurosurgery. This has led to a further accumulation of medical bills totalling over US$500,000 (Five hundred thousand United States dollars), a figure that increases with each passing day Okiki spends at Johns Hopkins.

Prior to the complications which have arisen, what made a determination of the full cost of Okiki’s surgery difficult is that in modern times, it is an extremely rare (perhaps singular) medical condition with no precedence to draw indicators from. This latter fact also means that it is equally difficult to tell what other medical complications may arise; just like the fluids that were retained in her cranial cavity has posed an unforeseen challenge and may have led to a fatal infection.
As Okiki may not be released from hospital until all outstanding bills have been paid on one hand, and as we and her parents are desirous of her condition being fully remedied before she does leave the hospital on the other, we would like to appeal to the global public to support our cause in ensuring that Okiki gets a full chance at life.

ASUU begins nationwide strike..READ STORIES!

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) yesterday Monday July 1st commenced indefinite nationwide strike. ASUU national president Dr Nasir Isa Fagge told newsmen yesterday that they are embarking on the indefinite strike because 'The Federal Government reneged in the Memorandum of Understanding MoU signed with ASUU in 2009 to pay lecturers their earn allowance.'

"The strike starts today (Monday) and it is going to last for as long as the Federal Government wants it. HISTORY BEHIND WIZKID MUSICAL BIOGRAPHY

Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun a.k.a Wizkid is a talented singer, songwriter and performer. He kicked off his singing career at the early age of 11 when he recorded his first song with one of Nigeria’s celebrated music icons, OJB Jezreel. He went on to record a 7-track album, which he released in his church in Lagos, under the name of Lil’ Prinz; this was just a stint that earned him a remarkable deal of encouragement and recognition from family, his church and other artistes.

Years later in 2006, with a new stage name, and a passion for making music and God-given talent, Wizkid got back into the studio to hone his craft. He continued to develop as a Singer and Songwriter by working under some of Nigeria’s biggest Musical names such as OJB Jezreel, Naeto C, Ikechukwu and many others. Over the next few years his talent as a Singer and Songwriter became evident and it resulted in Wiz being prominently featured alongside some of the biggest Artistes in Nigeria’s Music Industry to much critical and commercial acclaim.
2009 would prove to be Wizkid’s break-out year, as his collaboration with M.I on “Fast Money, Fast Cars” on the Talk About It album drew major attention to his distinct voice, singing style and penchant for great songwriting. He went on to feature on Kel’sTurn by Turn”, the  Barcelos radio jingle and many other high profile projects. He also got signed to Banky W’s Empire Mates Entertainment, and featured prominently on Banky’s “The W Experience” album.
At the age of 20, this extremely talented and charming young man had already achieved so much, thanks to his drive and focus for turning his life’s experiences into incredible music. In 2010, he released his first singles, “Holla at your Boy”, “Gidi Girl” and “Ori Mi” with label mate, Skales; then there was the hit song, “Tease Me” which was just a studio freestyle that got leaked online and turned into a big hit in different parts of Nigeria and among Nigerians worldwide.
He bagged the coveted award for the Promising Artiste of the Year at the 2010 edition of the Dynamix All Youth Awards, collaborated with several artistes and performed at some A-list events; some of which include the Soundcity Music Video Awards, Lord of the Ribs Lagos, Rhythm Unplugged, the Shutdown Concert with Rick Ross, the Koko Concert, Crack Ya Ribs Lagos, Face of Selera 2010 Abuja just to mention a few.
